Natalia Melbard ‘28
Meet Natalia Melbard, a junior from Cedar Point, N.C., who is majoring in biomedical engineering and minoring in dance. With the support of financial aid, Natalia has explored her passions through dance, hands-on engineering, and a Duke Engage service-learning project in Uganda, where she and her teammates developed CannaSave. The device is designed to alert nurses when babies’ nasal cannulas become dislodged. Driven by compassion, creativity and a desire to make a difference, Natalia hopes to bring the device to hospitals around the world while continuing to create medical technologies that help people.

Deborah Lendore ‘26
Deborah Lendore’s journey from a close-knit Brooklyn community to Duke was shaped by her experiences navigating gaps in healthcare. Inspired by her mother’s challenges, she discovered a passion for improving the systems and operations that help hospitals serve their communities. With the support of Duke financial aid and the Susan J. Danberg Scholarship, Deborah was able to complete her senior year while supporting her family during her grandmother’s illness. Now pursuing a Master of Health Administration at UNC, she hopes to lead healthcare organizations and create more accessible, compassionate care for all.

Derek Rhodes ’15, M.B.A.’27
Derek Rhodes believes that community is the foundation for personal growth and meaningful change. At Duke, Derek pursued his passions, from public policy and studying abroad to internships at the Department of Justice and the White House. Today, as an M.B.A. student at Fuqua and founder of Durham Success Summit, he works to expand career opportunities and economic mobility for young people in his community. Guided by a commitment to service and leadership, Derek hopes to make a lasting, positive impact wherever his journey takes him.
