Fuqua grad fulfills lifelong mission to support education

Joe Swedish M.H.A.’79 credits his first-generation roots and early upbringing as a son of immigrant parents with motivating him to pursue an advanced education.
As a child, he says, he developed “a great deal of respect for the struggles families and their children have and recognizes the value of education to find your direction in life and achieve what you expect of yourself.”
Swedish received his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and then a Master’s in Health Administration from Duke University before launching an illustrious career in health care management that spanned five decades.
Early in his career, Swedish decided to get involved in public service and dedicate his career to managing health care organizations. He credits his Duke education for developing his expertise in financial analysis and organizational design, and honing his passion for leading hospital organizations embedded in communities with rich traditions of community service to make them competitive in the markets they serve. Swedish believes the extensive team and project work at Duke gave him the skills he needed to achieve success in difficult situations, having learned that problems are simply solutions looking for applications.
After graduation, Swedish served as CEO of many health care organizations, including Anthem, Inc. (one of the nation’s largest health insurers), Trinity Health and Centura Health. He was also a senior executive at Hospital Corporation of America and was named one of Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare for more than 12 years. In 2019, Swedish received the prestigious Charles A. Dukes Award to recognize his outstanding volunteer service to Duke University.
Over the years, Swedish’s fondness for Fuqua has remained constant.
“Collegiality is a differentiating characteristic of the Duke academic experience. Team Fuqua is what makes us special. It’s who we are and what made us successful as an academic program.” — Joe Swedish M.H.A.’79
He served on the Fuqua Board of Visitors, including a highly successful stint as chair of the Board of Visitors. He was chair of Fuqua’s Duke Forward Campaign Committee, illustrating his dedication and commitment to promoting higher education. Fuqua surpassed its campaign goal of $100 million, finishing at $126.8 million during the effort that spanned 2010-17. Under Swedish, the Fuqua Board of Visitors was instrumental in the success of the campaign.
Now, he’s participating in MADE FOR THIS: The Duke Campaign, the university’s most ambitious fundraising and engagement effort to date. A longtime supporter of the Fuqua Center for Health Sector Management, Swedish and his family established two scholarships at the business school. Recently, Swedish’s family foundation continued its mission of supporting the enrichment of communities and education by making a new substantial commitment to the Joseph and Gene Swedish Family Foundation Scholarship. The foundation’s commitment received a match from The Duke Endowment in Charlotte, expanding the impact of the Swedish family support.
“Being affiliated with The Duke Endowment, as a contributor, is the fulfillment of a history that dates back to the start of my career,” explained Swedish. “It takes what I created in terms of wealth and allows my foundation to offer scholarships to students with first-generation experience. This brings my career back to home base.”
